Introduction
An individual living with HIV (PLWH) goes through several stages and may also return to earlier stages throughout their life. In order to understand how HIV care delivery fits, Gerizim Consortium has come up with this course to ensure care givers are versed with this knowledge with the ultimate goal of viral load suppression. Viral load suppression not only improves individual health, but it also reduces HIV transmission on a population level. Care providers will obtain knowledge on the HIV/AIDS clinical signs, symptoms, modes of transmission, risk factors, prevention, and screening and diagnosis .The participant will receive an overview on Common HIV medical complications, HIV virus duplicates and general classes of drugs that target each stage of HIV replication.
Course ObjectivesBy the end of the course, trainees will be able to:
- Explain the epidemiology of HIV infection, the mode of HIV transmission and its effects on the host
- Understand counseling, HIV-testing and psychosocial support
- Describe the common opportunistic infections seen in HIV-infected Explain the rational use of antiretroviral agents,
- Understand the risk of mother to child HIV transmission
- Discuss home based care and palliative care
- Describe ethical and legal issues in care of PLWAs
- Understand Post Exposure Prophylaxis and the Universal precautions
